DIGITAL FABRICATION & DEPLOYABLE STRUCTURES | TU BERLIN (GERMANY)| 2019 | TEAM: TU BERLIN (ALEMANIA), ETSAE (SPAIN), FENG CHIA TAICHUNG (TAIWAN) | TYPOLOGY: HABITAT/DIGITAL
The main objective of this winter school is to investigate the design and building of different
prototypes of deployable, flying and/or inflatable structures. These objects can either settle in a
space in order to be inhabited temporarily or have a specific function. In this workshop, we suggest
designing an “inhabitable cell”, where the condition of flying and inflation allows us to move in
different spheres. In teams of 3 you will design prototypes with a maximum volume of 2,4 / 2,4 / 2,4
m. Start your designs following different basic schemes of deployable structures, flying objects,
and inflatable devices, given by the teachers. Each proposal should include at least two of the
three conditions: deployable and flying structure, deployable and inflatable structure, flying and
inflatable structure. Teams will consider in their projects different ways to optimise their
designs, and the prototypes should be built attending to limited space and time. The prototypes will
be built on 1:1 scale and will attend to the physical and real characteristics of the project.
