FIRST AIDS KIT FOR SEA RESCUE. DIGITAL FABRICATION SEMINAR. | TU BERLIN (GERMANY) | 2019 | TEAM: TU BERLIN (GERMANY), ETSAE (SPAIN), FENG CHIA TAICHUNG (TAIWAN) | TYPOLOGY: FIRST AID KITS
Migratory movements across the Mediterranean sea to Europe often lead to the coast of Spain.
Crossing over the open sea is one of the most dangerous escape routes ever. Thousands of people lost
their lives in the attempt. The rescue efforts of the refugees, who are often on the way for days,
as well as the first aid on the ships and later on the mainland represents a great challenge for
rescuers and rescuers. The triple Seminar fold/inflate is a one+one+one week design workshop, in
which we want to explore and develop deployable and/or inflatable prototypes to be used in sea
emergency rescue. At the end of the series of three seminars, the finished and ready-to-use
prototypes are meant to be handed over to the aid organisations and tested in action. The seminars
will take place in Berlin and Cartagena. The main objective of this seminar is to design and build
different prototypes of deployable and/or inflatable structures to be used in sea emergency rescue.
The prototypes must meet the following criteria: provide protection from direct sunlight and heat
(prevent hypothermia). The structure must be deployable and/or inflatable, and reusable as often as
desired. They have to be able to hold infrared portable heating panels that might help in case of
available electricity. Each team of three students will design their prototype for a maximum volume
of 2.40m x 2.40m x 2.40m. Students will start their designs following different basic schemes of
deployable structures and inflatable devices.
