BEWEGLICHE TRAGWERKE. | UNIVERSITÄT SIEGEN (GERMANY) | 2015- | TEAM: UNIVERSITÄT SIEGEN | TYPOLOGY: DEPLOYABLE PROTOTYPES
The seminar is intended as a practical experimentation of the deployable systems. At the beginning,
basic information will be provided on the different deployable systems to be used. These are the
patent of Emilio Pérez Piñero; USA3185164 "Three Dimensional Reticular Structure", which explains
different three-dimensional systems formed by interlocking bars, the patent of Félix Escrig
Pallarés, 8505073 A1 "Sistema Modular para la Construcción de Estructuras Espaciales Desplegables de
Barras", in which modular scissor systems are developed, as well as the patent of Chuck Hoberman,
USA 4942700 "Reversibly Expandable Doubly Curved Truss Structure". After the theoretical part, the
students are divided into groups and start experimenting. Prototypes are developed by building
models. The practical work is corrected by the teacher throughout, so that continuous learning and
optimisation is set in motion. The first three years can be described as analogue because of the
mechanical methods of model making. The bars are cut with a traditional saw and the joints are made
with simple means such as plastic straps or screws. In the following three years, digital methods
are used. The drawings are made in CAD programs and the elements are manufactured with CNC milling
machines and laser cutters. At the same time, the digital paradigm is not just a new medium, it is
revolutionising the way we understand architecture. After a century of working with standardised
systems, a new era is dawning in which the easy production of customised prototypes is economically
and productively possible.
